On Recovery

When self care becomes burnout and we're not recovering from the work we're doing to recover, it's time to swim out of the mainstream and get some perspective.

Ambient or Active? Why getting rest that restores might look different than you think.

How active rest can repair the ravages of burnout, and tame the ambient screen wormhole.

It's been a(nother) rough-as few days in the media hellscape, and I'm just here to say I feel it too. There *are* things you can do to take care of yourself. Happy spring equinox! Days stretch out longerand longer from here till midsummer 🌺 "The campsite rule" says that we should leave anyplace we spend time a bit better than we found it, and damn Dolly, you sure did that. Still thinking about burnout - about deep rest (midwinter hibernation anyone?), about inequality and structural reasons for our overwhelm, as well as about the biology of what's happening - being stuck in fight or flight and getting more and more tangled the more we try to save ourselves. Winter mood meme dump β˜”οΈ The reason we can’t Put our phones down is STRUCTURAL not PERSONAL! Are you a registered Wellbeing practitioner looking for a private practice space? Just read an entire therapist thread with things therapists wish they could say to their clients and this is the TLDR. Things I draw in session clockwise from top left: An example of a "spiky profile" in neurodivergence (some of us are fine with loud sounds but have HUGE trouble with chronoception (being able to sense time), some of us struggle wildly with emotion regulation but can turn up within 30 seconds of any scheduled date); A 'worry tree' - can you do anything about the thing you're worrying about? really? if you can then do it, or plan to do it with a real schedule - if you can't then feel your feels about that then go get distracted (or sweat it out); A rough, incorrect version of Maslow's hierarchy - if we're not secure in the basics it stops us being able to acknowledge things higher up in the pyramid of needs; A REALLY simple version of energy accounting: if Thursday is going to be really 'high demand' you might need to make sure Friday has lots of low/no demand time to let your nervous system get organised.
